Idona

Idona

What does Idona mean?

I love finding out the meanings behind names and Idona is probably one of the most beautiful, underrated girls' names I have come across.

In my spiritual view a name is a prayer said over a child each time it is called, it is not a label. And Idona bears blessings on every level. Idona is a unisex name it means a female in love. It is pronounced as ahDOWNah. Idona's origins are German. Idona isn't popular as a woman name.

Detailed Meaning

  • Origin: Teutonic
  • Quick Meaning: Industrious Worker
  • Number of letters: 5, Those 5 letters total to 25
  • Gender: Girl
  • Teutonic: Female Hard working.
  • Norse: Female Active in love.

Idona has two lovely meanings, Idona in Norse mythology is a variant spelling of Idunn, the Norse god of youth and springtime. In old legends Idunn kept the magic golden apples which kept the gods young forever. Without her apples the gods would get old and weak. She was allegedly stolen away by a giant and the gods aged and withered (so Loki had to) come a falcon to bring her home safely. But this story tells us something powerful: Idona is the one everyone needs, the keeper of freshness and life itself.

Secondly, this name is Latin: from the medieval name Idona, from Latin, "suitable," or "worthy," which was a real name in English in the Middle Ages for women. I think this is just as precious: it says a girl called Idona is right, deserving and worthy of all good things.

The "I Do" in Idona, is crazy. My spiritual view is that "I do" is among the most sacred words a person can speak. Just think where we say it. In a wedding the vow is "I do" - faithfulness before God and others. It is when two lives merge into one.
At baptism and confirmation, the answer to faith is "I do" (Do you believe?) well yes, I do. The soul says yes to God.
The word "I do" is the language of commitment - I do care / I do believe / I do show up / I do keep my word in everyday life.

So I think a girl named Idona has a vow in her name. Every time she is named it starts with a promise. So from my spiritual view, that makes Idona a name special in all sorts of way, one who says yes to love, yes to faith, yes to life, and who keeps her word.

Taken all together, Idona means: a youth and springtime keeper whose life begins with a promise. She is like the goddess, the one who renews and keeps hearts young (and like the sacred vow) the one whose yes can be trusted.

But before I go any further, I want to end with this thought, to me spiritually, a girl named Idona is springtime. By choosing this name for a daughter, you are picking a quiet blessing for her whole life. Blessings x
