Left Eye Twitching Spiritual Meaning

Left Eye Twitching

Uncover hidden superstitions meanings

The most common reason that your eye may twitch could be stress, lack of sleep, fatigue or caffeine. The eye twitching can carry on for days and then suddenly go away.

I first noticed my own eye twitching annoyance when I went to work in London, I would sit at my desk and the itching would start. So what about superstitions? Any movement in the eyelid, according to Western folklore, indicates money in the future. Violent jerking of the left eyelid can mean that someone is talking negatively about you.

Today, there are only two Universities that have Folklore departments that offer courses on customs and there is also a general folklore course. I have analysed the research around eyes in general. There was some customs about twitching and itching eyes which I have detailed here.  Perhaps the single most thing to come from my study into general folklore around the left eye is the assumption that when it twitches it denotes new situations and pre-contact cultures.

In Latin the phase “Pruitus” indicates that something is itching. This can also indicate irritation and for a long time, a twitching or itching left eye has a number of superstitions that surround it. Cures for an itch or twitch was normally sorted in the early days from 1550 BC.

When your left eye twitches it means you are tired. When we are naturally tired we sometimes encounter spasms that can spread to our lower facial musculature. Normally, when my left eye twitches I know I am super tired and I try to get some rest. If that does not clear up the spasm I will turn to the spiritual meaning. In Indian culture the twitching of the left eye can mean someone will disappoint you. There is also a focus on luck and lust if both your eyes are twitching.

Here are quickly some strange spiritual meanings I have run across in my books:

  • Spiritual speaking the left eye twitching means someone will come to your home soon.
  • If your left eye twitches then rub the affected eye nine times with a gold wedding ring.
  • Brown eyes are said to be connected to mischief if the left eye is twitching it can mean irritability. Lighter brown eyes are associated with being constant in life. Also, if the left eye twitches or arches it can indicate a temper.
  • A left eye twitching that is hazel in color - in old folklore indicates a frolicsome turn or mischievous proposition. They are good-natured at heart and there is a focus on strong passion.
  • Red-eye in folklore indicates that one is angry (not sure I believe this too much!)
  • Most superstitions are extremely old, and the left eye twitching superstition reminds us that we need to accept visitors.
  • The larger the eye means that you are prominent and denotes a candid disposition. To have the bottom part of the left eye itching denotes a void of deceit.
  • There is a modesty about you according to the Spanish folklore if your eye twitches more than once in five minutes.
  • If your eye changes color from blue to brown as you get older then you are supposed to be lucky.
  • Light eyes twitching can mean being superficial.

Is the left-hand side significant?

The left eye has a notable focus on the way we communicate. Left (the direction) is part of the cardinal direction. The earth is after all a circle and the left hand side of something  enables us to observe others. A left eye itching can mean we need to watch others. The Zuni tradition has six directions not our own cardinal points.

Jerking and twitching on the lower left eyelid indicates you will get to the bottom of the problem. A slight twitch of the left eyelid means beware of being controlled by another. To feel the left-hand eye jumping indicates that your brother or sister will suffer an illness. (London Press vol 3) When the lower part of the right eye twitches indicates that happiness will be yours. (London Press vol 3) To feel your left eye twitching means people will be jealous. (Beware the Evil Eye Volume 4: The Evil Eye in the Bible)
