The Difference Between Guardians And Spirit Guides

Guardians And Spirit Guides

How to tell apart spirit guides and guardians is a question many people ask me.

This is the most common question I receive from students on my mediumship course, and it's one I enjoy answering. Having spent many years working with people on spiritual development, energy, and the unseen forces that shape our lives, I'd estimate that around 90% of people have at least one spirit guide.

In my experience, spirit guides and guardians are not the same. While they sometimes work together, they each have different roles. Understanding those differences can help you recognise their presence in your own life.

What Are Spirit Guides?

A spirit guide is a spiritual being whose role is to offer guidance throughout your life or during particular phases of your journey. Unlike a tour guide, they don't tell you exactly where to go, but instead gently encourage you towards the experiences your soul needs for growth.

Many mediums believe that your guides are connected to you through a shared life purpose or deep spiritual ancestry. Some people have one primary guide who remains with them throughout their lifetime, while others encounter different guides at different stages of life. Personally, my first guide appeared as an animal during childhood, and over the years my guides have changed and expanded as my own spiritual path developed.

What Is a Spiritual Guardian?

I am asked this question regularly. Although the terms are often used interchangeably, I see guardians and guides as having different responsibilities.

A guardian's primary purpose is protection. Rather than teaching lessons or offering wisdom, a guardian watches over you, helping to keep you safe during difficult or dangerous moments. They often provide comfort, reassurance, and quiet protection when you need it most.

A spirit guide, on the other hand, is more of a teacher. Guides help you learn the lessons your soul came here to experience and encourage your personal and spiritual growth. Many people have both a guardian and one or more spirit guides, although occasionally the same spirit may fulfil both roles.

Common Types of Spirit Guides

After many years of working with students and clients, I've noticed that certain types of guides appear repeatedly in people's experiences. These are simply patterns I've observed alongside beliefs found in many spiritual traditions.

Ancestral guides may be relatives such as grandparents or great-grandparents. Others feel connected to tribal or ancestral spirits they are not biologically related to. People often recognise these guides through familiar scents, voices, or memories, such as a grandmother's perfume or a grandfather's cigar.

Animal guides are often among the first guides people encounter. My own first guide appeared in animal form, and many clients describe receiving comfort, protection, or direction from animal spirits early in life.

  • Angelic guides, in my experience, are spiritual beings who radiate unconditional love and protection. Many people describe sensing an overwhelming feeling of warmth, peace, and safety when they believe an angelic presence is near.
  • Ascended masters and teacher guides are recognised in many spiritual traditions as highly evolved souls who dedicate themselves to helping others grow spiritually. These guides often appear during periods of significant personal transformation.
  • Childhood guides are another common experience. Many adults remember having an imaginary friend during childhood, only to later wonder whether that companion was actually a spirit guide. I've witnessed many emotional moments where clients reconnect with the same guide they remember from their earliest years.

How Do You Know You're Being Contacted?

This is usually the question people want answered most because they want practical signs to look for.

One common sign is receiving a calm, clear thought that feels different from your normal inner dialogue. Rather than feeling random or emotional, it arrives quietly and with certainty.

Many people also report repeatedly seeing the same numbers, symbols, or animals. I often refer to these repeated number sequences as angel numbers because they frequently appear during important moments of spiritual growth.

Another common experience is a strong feeling that you should change your plans without any obvious reason. You may suddenly decide not to take a journey, avoid a particular place, or walk a different route, only to later discover you unknowingly avoided danger. In my experience, these intuitive nudges can sometimes come from your guides or guardians.

Whenever I teach spiritual development circles, I remind students that genuine guidance should ultimately feel positive within yourself. The message may not always be easy to hear, but authentic guidance encourages growth, compassion, and your highest good rather than fear or harm.

Final Thoughts

One thing I've learned throughout my years working as a medium is that spirit guides and guardians rarely make dramatic entrances. More often, they work quietly in the background, offering subtle guidance, gentle protection, and small nudges that can change the direction of our lives.

Whether you see them as spiritual beings, higher consciousness, or symbolic representations of intuition, taking time to know yourself better often makes these experiences easier to recognise. As your awareness grows, you may begin to notice the quiet presence of the guides and guardians who have been with you all along.
