Dreams About Monkeys

Monkeys are interesting dream symbols, they have great personalities - which makes them excellent metaphors for human behavior. In some cases, monkeys may be seen as a representation of our primal instincts and base desires. They can also symbolize chaos, disorder, and mischief.

What does a dream of a monkey mean?

To explain this dream, l commence with my little story that will hopefully teach you the meaning of this dream. Sitting in a tree, a monkey dreams of life. His dream depicts a vast jungle teeming with life. As he swings from vine to vine, climbs to the top of the tallest trees, and leaps through the air, he feels alive and free. As he awakens from his dream, he finds himself still seated in the tree. Rather than seeing the jungle as an adventure, he now views it as a dangerous place. In the vines and trees, he feels hemmed in, and he fears falling if he jumps.

Seeing the sun shining down on him, the monkey looks up at the sky. At that moment, he realizes that his dream was not about life, but about fear. Freedom does not exist in the jungle; it is full of traps and dangers. Awakening from the dream is the only way to escape. Thus, the monkey sits in the tree, dreaming of life and waiting for the day when he can escape the jungle of his mind. What is on your mind? Through escaping the jungle of his mind, the monkey learns to think positively. It is only by letting go of all negative thoughts and believing in himself that he can be truly free. In the end, the monkey decides to take the leap and leave the jungle behind. Now that he's free to live his life as he pleases, he's happier than ever before - by taking that leap of faith and starting to live his life the way he wants to, which leads to contentment. This is the key message of the dream, what is holding onto your mind? Why is it like a jungle? Therefore, after this dream it is important to clear your mind and look at your behavior.

The reason being, is that monkeys are often used in metaphors to describe human behavior. For example, the phrase "monkey see, monkey do" is used to describe how people often imitate the behavior of others around them. Monkeys are also known for being playful and curious, which can be seen as a metaphor for the childlike innocence of humans. As well as this, monkeys are often thought to be mischievous and cunning, which is used to describe people who are up to no good.

What is the dream about a monkey mean spiritually?

Based on different cultural traditions, there are many possible dream interpretations of monkeys, depending on the details and we will look at your dream in greater depth. There are many cultures (from my research) where monkeys are seen as positive symbols and others where they are seen as negative symbols. It is possible to dream of a group of monkeys as a symbol of chaos or mischief, depending on the context. In your dream, the monkeys could be in tropical and subtropical regions, in your house, or even at the zoo. The place the monkey is found in the dream needs to also be interpreted. Remember, Monkeys can live in trees or on the ground, depending on the species. Typically, monkeys eat fruits, leaves, flowers, and insects. Thus, seeing monkeys eating food in a dream can indicate that you need to get back to nature.

What did you see in your dream?

There is no consistent definition of what constitutes a monkey. Some species may overlap with apes – especially the chimpanzee and the bonobo – and/or lemurs, therefore you might not know precisely if your dream was of a monkey or ape but my dream meaning here is based on you seeing monkey-like figures in the dream. Colloquially, the terms monkey and ape are widely used interchangeably. Also, a few monkey species have the word "ape" in their common name.

This is also a dream about your intelligence as Monkeys are generally considered to be intelligent, particularly the Old World monkeys. Grouped with my earlier interpretation it can mean it is intelligent to work through those jungle thoughts - clearer thinking and getting back to basics. Various monkey species have been found to be capable of using tools and solving complex problems. Sign language is also used by some monkeys!

In some cultures, monkeys are also signs of the spirit, and here are the spiritual messages:

  • Care and tenderness are needed
  • Curiosity and wonder should be our approach to life
  • Fresh starts or new beginnings
  • Hope and possibility are symbolized by this symbol
  • It's a reminder that we are all connected and interconnected
  • The innocent side of us that represents our inner child
  • Life's simple pleasures are worth enjoying
  • Making mistakes and learning from them is okay
  • Having fun and being playful
  • Our interconnectedness and interdependence is needed in order to live our best life. This dream is about gaining what you need and I feel that it does mean you need to watch out for "monkey business."

Is the dream of a monkey good or bad?

It is mixed. It can be good or bad, depending on what the monkey was doing in the dream. Generally speaking, in older dream books, monkeys tend to symbolize mischief, chaos, and disorder. They can also represent our primal instincts and base desires. In some cases, monkeys may also be seen as a representation of our shadow selves - the darker, repressed aspects of our personality that we may be unwilling or unable to confront. Think about what parts of your life are out of control or chaotic if you dream of a monkey. What base desires or instincts do you feel like you are struggling to keep in check? By confronting and addressing these issues, you may find greater clarity and peace in your waking hours. A group of monkeys is called a troop and this indicates they are social creatures, so seeing a group of monkeys in a dream is a positive omen.

The number of monkey species known to exist is approximately 260. There are two distinct lineages of monkeys, the New World monkeys (platyrrhines) and the Old World monkeys (catarrhines). Monkeys from the Old World make up about 75% of all monkey species. It is common for monkeys to have curved fingers and toes, as well as limbs that are shorter than their bodies. Their skulls are narrow and their snouts are pointed.
