They also, since they are attached to the ear, can draw attention to aspects of hearing and so in the waking world will indicate things being said, possible rumors, and needing to listen in the waking world. I also feel it is about "hearing" something important in life. I have spent allot of time going over old folklore books and this is my conclusion:
