Most people who are drawn to this animal spiritually, are very lucky in my view. I don't know if you know, but the prairie dog is from the same species of animals as the squirrel. This is about "collection" in life. The reason I say this is that this is collecting what is good for you, and what is not.

Squirrels have longer tails and live on trees whereas the prairie dogs have shorter tails and they live underground. They live in huge communities in burrows inside the earth spread over hundreds of square kilometers. Sometimes this network of burrows can be spread over thousands of square kilometers as well.

What does the prairie dog mean spiritually?

The prairie dog normally has these large solemn eyes which help it to negotiate the dark maze of tunnels of the network. The eyes of the prairie dog are symbolic in my view,  in the sense that you are being told to see everything in an overall perspective and not a narrow one.

This dog when it comes to you (or you see it) symbolizes that you should be grateful for what you have. The symbol of the prairie dog teaches you to take things in your stride and not to falter in your step. It tells you that a time of peace and well-being have arrived and you should take full advantage of it.

The hidden meaning in my folklore books are that the prairie dog teaches you that your outlook about life should always be positive. Only then the people around you will feel the impact of this positive outlook and reciprocate to you in the same way.

In my research the prairie dog is fiercely defensive of its territory and is very aggressive in protecting its family and home. This symbolic meaning means that your family and home is very sacred to you and they should be protected with all the might you have.

The prairie dog mainly eats grass and sometimes insects, in the real world. Their droppings act as fertilizers and their burrows help in avoiding run-offs or floods during the rains. The reason I mention this is that this tells you to work in a constructive way so that your work not only benefits you but also others.

On another note, the prairie dog is very social animal and communicates very well with its family and other prairie dogs in the community. In my view as a medium, it is showing you that you need to be social but I often see them appear when things are going to turn out well. They are in my view, a lucky omen.
