Wolverine

To the Native Americans, the wolverine was called “carcajou.”  The term is derived from the French corruption of the Native American name that signifies an evil spirit or a term which they use that literally translates to Mountain Devil.

The wolverine is a literal animal and is not a spiritual entity or a devil.  It is considered to be the largest of the weasel family, at a height of one foot and weighing thirty pounds at the greatest.  It has a long, dark fur which has a lighter-colored band running at its back.

It is known to be fierce, daring, and cunning that it can steal your things just as easily as any experienced thief can.  It is so powerful that even the most ferocious animals in the forest such as the wolf or the bear is not known to fight with it.

The wolverine fights in order to win without any regard for the strength and size of his opponent.  The only weakness that this animal has though is that it sees things poorly.  It also has a stinking smell which can be released by its glands when provoked.

To the Native Americans, the wolverine is the skunk-bear or carcajou perhaps due to its unmistakable odor.

It is also called a “glutton” due to its huge appetite. Men who trap animals and live in the backwoods know how much destruction a wolverine can create.  They are known to invade cabins and to do much damage to food caches.

Wolverines share some characteristics which is similar to the badger.  They are both taken as highly symbolic of living in the wild.  Since the wolverine is carnivorous, it usually takes up all the power and attributes of the animal that he eats.  Hence, the wolverine is the keeper of the attributes of all other animals.
