Powerful, mysterious, unpredictable, uncontrollable, and vast, the ocean symbolizes “immense illogic.”

It has been called the source of all life, thus likened to a maternal figure. The ocean can represent one’s excitement or fear of the uncharted depths of the unknown. There are several superstitions that people have about the sea but many of the superstitions are more relevant for the sailors and other people who spend most of their time in the sea. There are various superstitions that sailors have had for a long time that if they are violated then the vessel is never to be seen back on the dock and so is the entire crew on board.

Superstitions At Sea

There are some superstitions that have been proven wrong by the scientist but the ocean is a mysterious place for many and they still cling to the beliefs as they want assurance of their safety at all costs. There is a recommendation that people should never start their journey on the first Monday of any April as this is considered extremely unlucky because it is the day that Cain Slew Abel, it was the first murder ever commuted on earth. Neither is it recommended that a person starts a voyage on the second Monday of any August as this is believed to be the day that the Lord destroyed the city of Sodom and Gomorrah.

If one starts a sea voyage on the 31st of December then they may never, make it at all and this is believed to be the day that Judas Iscariot, the descendant of Jesus who betrayed him committed suicide. For the seaman any black traveling bag is considered extremely unlucky, this superstition is due to the belief that black is the color that resembles death and all types of bad luck, on the other end the color is believed to be an indication of the greatest depths of the oceans.

There is a need to avoid people who have black hair because this may attract bad luck to your side if sailing on the ocean. To avoid bad luck one will have to talk to the red-haired person before they leave. If someone says good luck to you while you are about to set sail then this will be automatic bad luck and you will need to reverse it for an assurance of getting back to the dock safely, in order to reverse this you will need to draw some blood or at times make a swift punch in the nose and all will be okay. These are strange ancient superstitions that will not be true in this day and age!

Summary of Ocean Superstitions

Finally, if you need good luck then when sailing avoids people who are flat-footed. This is a sure sign of bad luck, just like the case with the red-haired people all you need is to talk to the individual before they talk to you to reverse this bad fate.
